Ahmedabad-based startup Just Dogs has raised $7 million in a funding series from Sixth Sense Ventures. This pet-focused startup will utilize the funding in creating a full-stack online experience for the parent pets along with the expansion of online stores.

The company was set up by the Duo of husband and wife Poori and Ashish Anthony in the year 2011. The company deals in various products like-

  • dog foods,
  • supplements,
  • accessories and other pet products.

In combination with dogs related goods, the company recently has also put its hands on the products of cats. They also promote and facilitate pet insurances and publish a charge-free pet magazine named “Creation Companion”.

The founder, Ashish, is expertise in training K9 specialist from Police Dog Center, Holland. After the establishment of the startup in 2011, the founders have bootstrapped Just Dogs' profitability and reached out to outside investors. He also revealed that the inspiration was given by boutique investment bank Panini on the transaction.

Through its offline stores, Just Dogs also provides pet training and grooming services for pets.

The pet care market is going to witness growth; according to the India International Pet Trade Fair (IIPTF), an average of 600,000 pets are adopted every year. Therefore, with an increasing population of pets, and an increasing knowledge related to how to better care for pets, pet parents are spending more on such products.

Some of the pet-focusing startups in India are:

  • Wiggles,
  • Collar Folk,
  • Doggie Dabbas, and others.

Executive opinion:

In his words, “With over 30 Mn pets, the Indian pet industry is just coming of age, becoming the fastest-growing pet market in the world. There has been an evolution from dog owners to a rising number of pet parents who treat pets as their children, leading to informed consumers graduating towards higher quality, premium products. This is creating a large opportunity for the company to capture.”

Nikhil Vora, founder and CEO of Sixth Sense Ventures, said, “Being a first mover, Just Dogs has a clear edge to create a full-stack engagement brand by leveraging on its omnichannel presence, clearly a high entry barrier in an otherwise fragmented market.”
